The Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit Volunteer Program allows people to complete community service or volunteer hours in the Metro Detroit.
Volunteers can choose from seven different locations.
Why Volunteer with Us?
Volunteering with Goodwill Detroit presents you with a unique working environment. Your time with us can help you improve your current skills, or offer a chance to gain new ones.
While volunteering in our retail stores, you can make your own schedule. This way you can fit in time to volunteer around work, school or other life priorities.
While volunteering with us, you are helping to improve the Metro Detroit community. You will also be supporting Goodwill Detroit’s efforts to help local Detroiters become trained and ready to work.
Volunteer with Donated Goods
Each one of our stores needs volunteers. We have store locations in Dearborn, Livonia, Woodhaven, Ypsilanti, Canton, and Commerce. The stores are open throughout the week, on the weekends, and in the evenings. We also have a warehouse location on the west side of Detroit. These working conditions may be more weather dependent and labor intensive.
Volunteers help stock shelves, move furniture, sort donated items, and more. While this may not seem like much, this work is a powerful piece of our mission. Every sale made in our retail stores helps to fund the many programs and services that Goodwill offers. You can learn more about these programs here.

Step 3: Goodwill will run a criminal background check on you. All volunteer applicants that are a good match for our stores will have their applications forwarded to the store of their choice.
Please Note: Due to the nature of the retail environment, those with a criminal history that includes theft, physical violence or sexual misconduct within the last five to ten years may not be eligible to volunteer in our stores. If you are unsure about your background, we welcome all individuals in need of community service to submit your application for consideration.
Step 4: A Goodwill store manager will reach out to you to discuss your volunteer schedule.
Step 5: Show up!
If you would like to talk to a real person about this process, Alison would be happy to speak with you.
You can be our next story.
What I find here is love and purpose. Before the Clubhouse, I was ashamed of my diagnosis. Now, I understand that mental illness is what I have but it’s not who I am. The Clubhouse gives me a chance to be more than my disease.
I really had no idea what I was getting into. I’d never heard of Goodwill and wasn’t sure what they could do. But the people I talked to were reassuring and I could tell right away that this organization was going to help me.
I wanted to increase my skills and that’s why I came to the Goodwill, to increase my skills and improve.”
